THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 31. Hindustan Lever Limited, Ernakulam, has won the State Pollution Control Award, 2004, for large industries. The Kochi refineries won the special award for consistent effort and performance in up keeping the environment. The Awards were announced by the Health Minister, K. Sivadasan, here on Monday. The State Award for medium scale industries went to Synthite Industrial Chemical, Puthencruz, Ernakulam. Among the small-scale industries, Bhasuri Inn, Guruvayur, won the first place. In hospital waste management, Lakeshore Hospital, Nettoor, Ernakulam, won the first place and Maria Theresa Hospital, Kuzhikkattussery, Thrissur, the second place. Tharangam Hospital, West Yakkara, Palakkad, and Unity Hospital, Kunnamkulam, shared the third place. Among Government hospitals, the district hospital merited appreciation for neat maintenance and proper segregation facilities for biomedical wastes. Apollo Tyres, Perambra and Sepr Refractories, Kanjikode, Palakkad, shared the second place for large industries. The Hindustan Newsprint Limited, Velloor, came third. The second place for medium industries went to the Model TSR Factory, Manganam, Kottayam. The Malankara Plantations, Thoudupuzha, and Kodumon Group Latex Factory, Koodal, Pathanamthitta, were bracketed for the third place. The first two awards in each category carry cash prizes ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 25,000. All winners will receive merit certificates. Trophies would be presented to those who won first places. The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, will present the awards on June 5 in Kozhikode. The winners were chosen by an expert committee considering the quality and efficiency of pollution control measures taken by the companies, neatness of their premises, submission of mandatory reports, adoption of new technologies and recycling of effluents.
