Raichur
By Our Staff Correspondent
RAICHUR, MAY 31. N.S. Bose Raju, Manvi MLA and former Chairman of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Development Board, has said that the coalition Government, headed by N. Dharam Singh, has given priority to developing irrigation potential in Raichur district. Talking to The Hindu over telephone on Monday, he said the Government had accorded priority for improving irrigation facilities available in the command areas of the Tungabhadra and Upper Krishna projects in the district. It had issued an order giving the green signal to carry out comprehensive improvements to the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal. The Government had proposed to expedite pending works under the Narayanapura Right Bank Canal of the Upper Krishna Project. He said the command area of the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal was about six lakh acres covering Gangavathi, Sindhanoor, Manvi and Raichur taluks. Another six lakh acres of land would be brought under irrigation under the Narayanapura Right Bank Canal in the drought-hit Lingsugur, Deodurga and Lingsugur taluks. He said the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal was an old project in the district that needed to be strengthened. In the last two years, the canal had breached on several occasions affecting irrigation in the command areas both during kharif and rabi seasons. Earlier a Rs. 100-crore comprehensive proposal had been drawn up to strengthen the canal. But it was not implemented because of lack of funds. Now the Government had sanctioned Rs. 9 crores to the Water Resources Department to take up repairs on the canal to ensure uninterrupted water supply in the command area, he said. Mr. Raju said Mr. Dharam Singh and the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, had gone studied the issue and ordered the department concerned to take up repairs before the release of water for irrigation. They asked the officials concerned to finalise the tender process and take up repairs on priority.
