Six get life term for murder

MANGALORE, MAY 31. K.D. Deshpande, Second Additional District and Sessions Judge, on Monday sentenced six persons to life imprisonment in a murder case. A sum of Rs. 25,000 was imposed as fine on each of them.

They were convicted of murdering of Nagesh Poojary at Vamanjoor on July 17, 2002. Those sentenced are Rohi (31), alias Rohidas, Murugesh (22), Murgi (22), Yogish (23), Ganesh (20), alias Umesh, Gopala (22), alias Abbu, and Anil Noronha (36), alias Munna, all from places near Vamanjoor. An accused in the case, Mujahid, was acquitted.

The six were sentenced under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder; Section 143 for unlawful assembly for which the sentence is one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 3,000; and Section 147 for rioting in a public place for which the punishment is six-month imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2,000.

Udayashankar was the Public Prosecutor.

The Mangalore Rural Police filed the charge-sheet against the seven accused on October 11, 2002. Nagesh Poojary owned a club. Anil Noronha was an autorickshaw driver.

He and the other convicts came in an autorickshaw and attacked Nagesh Poojary when he waiting to board a bus along with his 18-year-old son, Sandeep Poojary. The victim died on the spot.

The police said that Rohi had been demanding "hafta'' from the victim. Rohi was also managing a club.

Rohi had threatened Nagesh Poojary with dire consequences twice in the club.
