DJ specialised in trance music

By Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI, MAY 31. The disc-jockey who was arrested along with a Nigerian national this past Thursday for allegedly being in possession of cocaine specialised in trance music that is played at "rave" parties.

During interrogation, the accused, Vikram Singh, disclosed that he used to attend rave parties at farmhouses and other places in neighbouring Ghaziabad and Gurgaon. Those who frequented such parties knew him by the name "Ibn Batuta". He further revealed that he specialised in trance and house music. These forms of music are played mostly in discotheques and raves. Raves are parties where people usually take drugs like cocaine and ecstasy for a high.

Trance is a freeform style of computer-generated music that originated from house music, which was created mainly for discotheques. This form of music constitutes a monotonous pattern of fast beats with high bass effect and brief voice inputs. Such a mix of sound is meant to hypnotise the listeners. It is also said to be emotionally uplifting when heard in an inebriated state. Owing to the hypnotising effect, most disc-jockeys try to master it for private parties, especially raves. It is also said that trance music has its origin in the troubled 1960s when hippie culture started flourishing. Such music, which became very much popular in Goa, gained prominence in parties where "recreational" and "psychedelic" drugs were used for pleasure.
