Expand the re-look

Sir, — I refer to S.K. Iyengar's letter (May 31) suggesting that the money spent on rituals such as consecration of idols be saved and earmarked for midday meals in schools. That such noble thoughts arise when we look at religious rites is welcome.

But our thoughts should not stop there. We should also have a re-look at huge amounts spent on one-day cricket matches, coffee clubs and dhabas, in cinema houses and in celebrating victories of politicians. The amount involved would be much more and many more can be fed.

T.S. Gopalakrishnan,
Chennai
