Russia beckons Indian students

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, JUNE 1. Russian universities specialising in medical and engineering studies will be represented at the Presentation of Russian Universities expo to be held at Hotel Atria on Palace Road here from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Among the universities being represented are the Moscow State Aviation Institute, the Moscow Power Engineering Institute, Tomsk Polytechnical University and Belgorod State University. Study Abroad, a centre for promoting higher studies in Russia, is conducting the event in association with the Russian Cultural Centres in India.

Some Russian universities in cities such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Yaroslavl and Taganrog are deemed world class. They have been recognised by the Medical Council of India, the All-India Association of Indian Universities, the Medical Council of Great Britain, the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. The degrees awarded by these universities are recognised internationally.

The Russian medical schools follow the criteria prescribed by the Medical Council of India for admitting Indian students. They require a minimum of 50 per cent marks in physics, chemistry and biology with a relaxation of 10 per cent for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Caste students. The Russian medical universities offer MD degrees which is equivalent to the Indian MBBS.

For engineering courses, the eligibility criteria are a minimum of 40 per cent marks in the higher- secondary examinations. Tthe courses are of four-year duration. Among the specialisations are aviation, aerospace instrumentation and ship building. The academic year in Russian universities starts in September.

Igor Zhelbakov of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute said that while students could obtain campus jobs for 10 months a year and off-campus jobs during the summer vacation, "the structured and sequential method of learning will leave little time for work.''

The cost of study, including tuition fees and hostel charges, could vary from $ 1700 to $ 5500, depending on the university's location and the course of study.
