Veeranam project commissioning by July-end

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 1. Chennai Metrowater will complete all the remaining works of the New Veeranam Project and commission the project by the end of next month.

Pipelines are being laid in the stretch between Veeranam lake at Sethiathope and Vadakuthu water treatment plant. Of this 20-km-long stretch, the work has been executed for 17 km, according to an official release today.

Giving an account of ongoing testing of Veeranam pipelines, the release said the hydraulic test was completed for 100 km. The test for the remaining 108 km will be over in a week.

During this period, water will be flowing into the Porur lake. Once the test for the entire length has been carried out, water will be taken to the Porur water distribution station.

Referring to the arrival of Neyveli water yesterday, Metrowater said four to five million litres a day (MLD) of water was initially flowing into the lake. This would gradually go up to 60 MLD.

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, gave sanction to the project as it was a lasting solution to Chennai water scarcity.

The Rs. 720-crore project envisaged laying pipelines from the Veeranam lake over a distance of 228 km.

Besides, action has been taken for sinking 45 deep borewells in Neyveli and Vadalur and nearby areas.

At present, the water level in Veeranam lake stood at 42.1 feet. The storage was 295 million cubic feet (capacity: 1,485 mcft). The lake was getting an inflow of 173 cubic feet per second (cusecs).

The release said the arrival of water yesterday under the New Veeranam Project became possible because of ``sustained efforts'' of the Chief Minister.
