NEW DELHI, JUNE 2. The move of telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to the six-day week sparked union unrest all over the country. Protests were held at the corporate headquarters here as well as at all Telecom Circle headquarters, where employees enjoyed a five-day week. The demonstration here turned violent with employees manhandling a senior journalist and damaging his car. Taking a serious view of the incident, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director, V.P. Sinha, assured disciplinary action against the guilty. The National Federation of Telecom Employees (NFTE), which led the demonstrations at most centres, was aggrieved that the decision had been taken without consulting the unions. The NFTE secretary, Islam Ahmed, said the reduction of off-days available to the staff had come at a time when the issue of perks had not been settled on grounds of financial difficulty. The NFTE wanted the matter reviewed and the five-day week restored till a final decision on all issues was taken.
