BANGALORE, JUNE 2. East Zone and Combined Zone posted victories in the Col. Hemu Adhikari Memorial inter-Academy tournament in progress here on Wednesday. East Zone defeated North Zone by 44 runs at the IAF Ground while Combined Zone snatched a 16-run victory over South Zone at the WAP Ground. Meanwhile Central Zone had to rest content with its 126-run first-innings lead over West Zone in a drawn encounter at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. East Zone declared its second innings at 181 for seven and set a target of 173. North Zone, however, failed to rise to the challenge as left-arm spinner S.K. Nadim bagged five wickets. North Zone was bundled out for 128. Another chase for honours unspooled in despair at the WAP Ground as South Zone chasing 135, collapsed to 118 all out in 26 overs leaving Combined Zone richer by four points. At the Chinnaswamy Stadium Central Zone with the first innings lead had an easy task in its second innings as Shan E Alam (100 n.o., 174b, 13x4) and Aris Alam (77 n.o.) shared a 159-run fourth-wicket partnership. Central declared at 186 and West, chasing 313, mustered 121 for one when the overs ran out.
Combined Zone 255 in 68.2 overs and 116 in 40 overs (Mahesh Rawat 80 n.o., Ryan Ninan four for 21, Gaurav Dhiman four for 39) bt South Zone 237 in 73.2 overs (Gaurav Dhiman 97, Jagrut Mehta four for 57, Ankur Garg three for 81) and 118 in 26 overs (Anirudh Srikkanth 51, A.G. Pradeep 28, Ankur Garg three for 23). Combined Zone 4 pts.
Central Zone 328 in 97.2 overs and 186 for three declared in 55.4 overs (Shan E Alam 100 n.o., Aris Alam 77 n.o.) drew with West Zone 202 in 83.4 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 50, Salim Pathan 39, Anand Singh 33, Murtaza Ali four for five, Avinash Yadhav three for 47) and 121 for one in 26 overs (Rohit Sharma 47, Salim Pathan 38 n.o., Raviraj Patil 31n.o.). Central Zone 2 pts.
