Plan to improve infrastructure in Vellore to attract tourists

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, JUNE 3. The infrastructure and amenities in various tourist spots in Vellore district are to be improved for the benefit of the public both during and off the summer season.

The deepening of the lakes at Yelagiri, Nilavur and Jalagamparai in Tirupattur taluk, and the Palamathi hills and Amirthi in Vellore taluk, operation of boating service in these lakes, renovation of the water falls areas, provision of drinking water facilities, improvement of the approach roads to various tourist centres were among the works to be undertaken through the District Rural Development Agency, the Vellore Collector, A.C.Mohandoss said in a release.

It was noted that tourists visiting the Yelagiri hills go for a boat ride at the boathouse, which was located in the proximity of the entrance to the hills. Therefore, in response to public demand, the Collector has decided to improve the tourist attractions lying beyond the boathouse inside the village so that tourists could see more places and enjoy their holidays.

A sum of Rs.1.75 lakhs has been allotted for deepening and beautifying the Nilavur lake lying on the other side of the main Athanavur village and strengthening the bunds of the lake. It has been proposed to operate boats on the lake after the completion of the work. The work was also expected to popularise the pathways to Nilavur. A sum of Rs.1 lakh has been allocated for converting the existing mud approach roads to the summer festival grounds and the boathouse into tar roads. Besides, it has been decided to provide permanent drinking water facilities at the festival venue through an overhead tank connected to a power pump at a cost of Rs.1.35 lakhs.

The two-feet-wide pathway used by the tourists in the boathouse to reach and alight from the boats proposed to be widened to four feet at a cost of Rs.1 lakh to avoid congestion during the summer season. Five check dams are to be built at the Jalagamparai falls--5 km from Tirupattur--at a cost of Rs.2.50 lakhs to facilitate a wider flow of water, while a percolation pond would be formed in the vicinity of the falls at a cost of Rs.2 lakhs.

With a view to providing a recreational venue to the students of the medical and engineering colleges in and around Vellore and the patients visiting the Christian Medical College Hospital here, the district administration has decided to undertake development works on the Palamathi hills near here. The tank on the hills would be desilted and deepened and the bunds strengthened at a cost of Rs.1.75 lakhs. Steps have also been taken to construct two check dams and repair the tank near the water falls at Amirthi at a cost of Rs.6.50 lakhs to facilitate a wider flow of water at the falls and attracts more tourists.
