Tirunelveli
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI, JUNE 3 . Members of the Opposition walked out of a meeting of the district panchayat council held here today, after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) members opposed the resolution, congratulating the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, on his assumption of office. As the meeting began this morning in the meeting hall of the district panchayat at the Collectorate, the Congress member, Amir Khan, moved the resolution. Though it enjoyed the support of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Left parties, the AIADMK, which had absolute majority in the council, opposed it. When the Opposition tried to explain the rationale, the ruling party councillors shouted at the members of the Congress, the DMK and the Communist parties. As the situation was going out of control, the chairperson, M. Devaki, of the AIADMK, said there was no need for a separate resolution, since the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had already greeted to Dr. Singh on behalf of everyone in the State. Unsatisfied, the Opposition councillors pressed their demand. However, the AIADMK members did not relent. Frustrated, the Opposition councillors walked out. Prior to the walkout, The Communist Party of India member, Rajangam, said Tirunelveli, which failed to receive sufficient rainfall for the past three monsoons, should be declared a `drought-hit district', and the State Government should release financial assistance to farmers. However, the AIADMK members repeatedly heckled him.
