HYDERABAD, JUNE 3. Newspaper readers in Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai can now buy the International Herald Tribune in their cities for Rs. 30 on weekdays and Rs. 90 on weekends. The line underneath the masthead reads: "The World's Daily Newspaper of The New York Times Printed in Hyderabad." The international daily is now being published out of the Deccan Chronicle Press in Kondapur, near Hyderabad, by T. Venkattram Reddy, on behalf of Midram Publications Private Limited. The imprint line announces that the editor is M.J. Akbar. In this sense, this appears to be the Indian edition of the paper rather than a mere printing arrangement. While little is known about the `launch' of the International Herald Tribune in India, reliable sources have estimated an initial print run of a little over 5,000 copies, of which 2,500 are sent to Delhi, 2,400 to Mumbai and about 500 copies are retained in Hyderabad. Top officials in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry are equally in the dark. A senior official expressed surprise and shock when asked if he was aware of the International Herald Tribune being printed out of Hyderabad, in what seems an Indian edition of the newspaper.
