NEW DELHI, JUNE 4 . The wreckage of a MiG-27 fighter aircraft, which went missing a fortnight ago after taking off from an air base in West Bengal, was found today 18 km from the place where it was supposed to land. As Indian Air Force and Army officials are yet to reach the spot, the fate of the pilot, Ajit Sinha, is not known. The wreckage was located after intensive search operations that included dropping of leaflets by helicopters in Indian and Bhutanese territory urging information on the plane that vanished from the radar screens while on a short flight from Hashimara to Bagdogra. IAF personnel and Army commandos scoured the thick forests on elephant back while official requests were sent to Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal for searching forests in their territories. The IAF also sent a large number of helicopter sorties. On the basis of fresh inputs, an air-borne search mission located the wreckage. A court of inquiry has been ordered while the Army and the IAF have cordoned off the area .
