VIJAYAWADA, JUNE 4. A couple, who were returning after having a darshan of Goddess Kanakadurga, were crushed to death by a Devasthanam bus at Indrakeeladri ghat road here on Friday. The couple were run over by the bus, which lost control after ramming into a jeep. However, their son and daughter had a narrow escape. Three persons who were travelling in the jeep and another passenger of the bus sustained injuries. The family, belonging to Sampara village near Kakinada in East Godavari district, arrived in the city from Tirupati on Thursday night and went to the Kanakadurga temple in the early hours. The couple, Mummudi Satibabu (35), his wife Naga Ramalakshmi (30), were walking down the ghat road with their children, Veerabhadra Rao, Suryaprabhavati, and the victim's brother, K. Bhaskarchandra, when the incident occurred. The Devasthanam bus, which was overloaded with over 60 pilgrims, was coming down the ghat road when its brakes failed. The driver lost control of the bus and rammed into a jeep and then ran over the couple. Their children were rescued by their uncle, K. Bhaskarchandra. The Devasthanam authorities announced an ex gratia of Rs. 50,000 each and made arrangements for the bodies to be shifted to their native village.
