Admission to MCA course

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMKOCHI, JUNE 4.JUNE 4. The result of the entrance examination for admission to the Master of Computer Application (MCA) course 2004, conducted on May 29, has been announced. Franco K.J. of Manalur, Thrissur, has secured the first rank, according to a press release issued here today by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE). The result will be available for reference in the office of the CEE and the Directorate of Public Relations, here. It has also been made available on the website "cee-kerala.org". The allotment of colleges and the admission to the course will be made by the Director of Technical Education, from the rank list published by the CEE and after verifying the eligibility of the candidate as per the conditions prescribed in the prospectus.

Candidates desirous of obtaining their mark list should apply to the CEE before July 1.

Free ration

The Government has sanctioned free ration for a month from June 1 to the workers of plantations which are remaining closed in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki and Wayanad. The ration consists of five kg of rice per week to each family. In the case of those without ration cards in the Idukki district, the free ration will be given on the basis of the yellow card issued by the Labour Department.

ITC cards in mobile phones

The BSNL has introduced the facility of using India Telephone Cards (ITC) in Cell-One post paid cellular connections. ITCs of any denomination could be used for the purpose and may be used as in land lines. Post paid cellular customers can also make STD and ISD calls using ITCs.

Honour for academic

G. Devarajan, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science and Director of College Development Council of the University of Kerala, has been selected for the Rashtriya Gaurav Award 2004 of the India International Friendship Society. The award will be presented to him at a function to be held at Chennai on July 30.

Telecom adalat

The BSNL Circle Telecom Adalat will be held this month. It will consider only cases which have not been settled at the SSA Adalat. The petitions of such cases with complete details are to be forwarded to J.Gomathy Ammal, Assistant General Manager (PG), Public Grievances Cell, PMG Junction, Thiruvananthapuram 33, before June 22. The envelope should be superscribed "Circle Telecom Adalat XIII". The complaints received after June 22 will be considered only in the next adalat. The date and time of the adalat will be communicated to the petitioners by post.

Award for book

The State Resource Centre proposes to give an award to the best informative book in connection with Reading Day on June 19. The books to be considered for the award should be in Malayalam and on subjects related to formal or non-formal education. Collections of essays, books on contemporary matters and studies which are helpful for the development of human resources, published between 2000 and 2003, will be considered. Interested persons may forward two copies of the book and their bio data to the Director, State Resource Centre, Pattom P.O., Thiruvananthapuram, before July 28. The publishers can also send entries. The prize for the selected book consists of a certificate, a plaque and a purse of Rs 5,000.

Joint Council's demand

The Joint Council of State Service Organisations has urged the Government to cancel the decision to appoint officers from the Rural Development Department in the Mission for the Rehabilitation of Tribals. The general secretary of the organisation, K.N.K.Namboodiri, said today that it was against the interests of the tribals and the employees of the department. It also violated assurance given to the service organisations earlier.

World Environment Day

THIRUVANANTHAPURAMKOCHI, JUNE 4.JUNE 4. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Young Indians (Yi), Kochi Chapter, are organising programmes on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. Watercolour painting and public-peaking competitionsfor children, discussions and clean-up campaign are part of the celebrations.

Port Trust awards contract

The Cochin Port Trust has awarded the contract for annual maintenance dredging work for the year 2004-05 to M/s.Jaisu Shipping Company Private Limited, Kandla, for Rs.27 crores.

The period of contract is for nine months, according to a press release.

UAE exchange

branch opened

KOLLAM June 4. A branch of the UAE Exchange, a money transfer and exchange company, was opened at Pallimukku in the city. With this, the company has 44 branches in the State. The branch manager, H.K. Ranjit, said in addition to regular money transfer service, the company also engages in issuing Saudi Riyal drafts for Haj pilgrims and the international debit card, ``cash passport'' for overseas travellers.

Painting

award

Asramam Santosh has won this year's Cine Narayanan Award for painting. The award was presented to him by the film actor, O. Madhavan, at a meeting here yesterday organised to commemorate the second death anniversary of Cine Narayanan. The meeting was inaugurated by the former Minister, V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai.

Competition

The Energy Conservation Society (ECS) will observe the World Environment Day on June 5 by organising a painting competition for high school students. The subject of the painting will be based on the water conservation theme. The event to be held at the Yatri Nivas Hotel is being organised by the ECS is association with the Petroleum Conservation Research Association and the Energy Management Centre.

Felicitated

THRISSUR, June 4. The Lord Krishna Bank felicitated the topper in the Kerala engineering entrance examination, Robin Anil, at a function organised at his home town Chenthrappinni, in the district. The Deputy General Manager of the bank, G. Raghunandanan Nair, and the Sree Narayana Education Council Trust general secretary, T. V. Sarngadharan, presented the awards.
