MADURAI, JUNE 4. A total of five colleges, affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University, are awaiting clearance from the University Grants Commission for the introduction of `innovative courses' from the ensuing academic year. These colleges have already submitted proposals to the UGC, seeking permission for the introduction of undergraduate, postgraduate diploma and diploma courses. The courses are "inter-disciplinary, unconventional and cater to the emerging areas." The funding from the premier national body, if the courses are cleared, will be to the tune of Rs.2.5 crores. The five colleges that have applied for new courses are the Lady Doak College, Fatima College and Thiagarajar College in Madurai, Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College in Sivakasi and TBAK College for Women in Keezhakarai. The proposals have been routed through the university and the UGC clearance would be got soon, P. K. Ponnuswamy, MK University Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu here on Thursday. He said permission for starting the proposed courses might be given to at least two or three colleges immediately or even to all the five colleges. A meeting between the UGC authorities and the college representatives had already taken place in New Delhi during a special interface programme held to study the potential of the courses. The Madurai-based Fatima College had sought approval for a postgraduate course in Nutraceuticals, an undergraduate course in B. Sc. Cheminformatics and Drug Design and diploma courses in Front Office Management, English for the Media and Translation Techniques. The Fatima College had already received seed money of Rs.5 lakhs for starting the diploma courses, according to college authorities, who also said that courses would be started straightaway once the formalities were over. While the Lady Doak College is awaiting clearance for a course in Environmental Studies, the Thiagarajar College is seeking permission for a PG Diploma course in Rural Biotechnology. The Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College has submitted a proposal for M. Sc. in Bioinformatics.
