COIMBATORE, JUNE 4. A short-term training programme in thin film science and technology at the PSG College of Technology, has drawn 40 participants from all over the country. Among the speakers were faculty from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Alagappa University. "In the morning there are lectures in different areas of science and technology, and in the afternoon, there are practical sessions in the laboratories, with the participants divided into 10 groups of four each," the Head of the Department of Physics of the college, S. Jayakumar, said here today. The programme, which will conclude on June 13, is sponsored by the All India Council for Technical Education and organised by the Indian Society for Technical Education. Teachers, as well as executives in industries and research organisations, are attending the course. Jayakumar said that the course content included high-density optical recording machines, high-efficiency solar cells, photonic materials and devices, micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS), sensors and actuators, electro optic materials, and ferro electric composites. The department had created a range of infrastructural facilities through projects funded by the All India Council for Technical Education, Department of Science and Technology, University Grants Commission and Indian Space Research Organisation. Faculty members were carrying out research in various subject areas covered in the training programme.
