NEW DELHI, JUNE 5. The Nagaland Chief Minister, Nephio Rio, met the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member, Sitaram Yechury, at the party office here on Friday and gave him a copy of a memorandum the Nagaland Government had presented to the Prime Minister seeking continuation of the peace talks in the State. The previous National Democratic Alliance government had carried forward the talks with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Issac-Muivah) group. Mr. Yechury told The Hindu that Mr. Rio said that for the first time various Naga groups were talking in terms of integration. He told Mr. Rio that the CPI(M) was for continuation of the peace process and any areas of conflict should be resolved through negotiations. In regard to the north-east, the Common Minimum Programme of the United Progressive Alliance was categorical that the territorial integrity of the existing States be maintained. Mr. Rio heads a coalition Democratic Alliance of Nagaland Government supported by the NDA constituents, including the Janata Dal (United). Mr. Rio broke away from the Congress to form the Nagaland People's Front and aligned with the NDA ahead of the Assembly elections to unseat the Congress Government. Factions considered close to the former Chief Minister, S.C. Jamir, are opposed to any move that could see Mr. Rio's party moving closer to the Congress though there is no such apparent indication. Discontentment is brewing in Arunachal Pradesh with several Congress leaders starting dissident activity against the Pradesh Congress chief, Mukut Mithi. Gegong Apang toppled Mr. Mithi, who headed a Congress Government, during July last year. Adding to Mr. Mithi's woes was the loss of Congress candidates in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Several State Congress leaders have complained to senior party leaders here against the latter's style of functioning and suggested that Mr. Mithi be removed.
