Plan to impound water in dam criticised

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JUNE 5. Araga Jnanendra and Jeevaraj, BJP MLAs for Tirthahalli in Shimoga district and N.R. Pura in Chikmagalur district, have warned of serious consequences if water is impounded in the dam of the Upper Tunga Project (UTP) without rehabilitating and paying compensation to the families who are likely to be displaced.

Addressing a press conference today at the dam site at Gajanur, about 10 km here, they referred to the claim reportedly made by the authorities of Karnataka Neeravari Nigam (KNN) that work on the construction of dam was in the final stage and water would be impounded in the dam in about 15 days. They warned that any move to do so would result in an agitation by the people who would be affected.

Mr. Jnanendra said the KNN had announced that it had deposited Rs. 1.5 crore with the Shimoga Urban Development Authority (SUDA) for the formation of a separate layout at Machenahalli, between Shimoga and Bhadravati, where the displaced families were to be given house sites. But the pace of work on the formation of the layout was slow, and it was unlikely to be completed before water was impounded in the dam.

Therefore, the impounding of water in the dam should be postponed, he said.
