Academy to bring out CDs on Kodava culture

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI, JUNE 9. Chiriyapanda Raja Nanjappa, President of the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, on Saturday, stated that compact discs (CDs) on Kodava culture would be brought out by the academy at its decennial celebrations scheduled for June 9 at Virajpet.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Nanjappa said the CDs included those on Cauvery Teertodbhava at Talacauvery, Kalladcha festival at the Iggutappa shrine, Makkisastavu festival, Nalnad Mand at Napoklu and Guru-Karonang Kodupo. The last one would feature the various styles of rituals in different regions of Kodagu.

He said a book on the functioning and achievements of the academy would be brought out on the occasion. A poets' meet would also be held. The shortage of grants had hampered the functions of the academy. Last year, the academy received a grant of Rs. 10 lakh, which could be cut in the current year.

Referring to the efforts of the academy in pressuring the State Government to recommend to the Centre the inclusion of Kodava in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, Mr. Nanjappa said the issue would be taken up with the new dispensation soon.

The academy had published 36 Kodava books and organised 23 cultural programmes in various parts of the district and the border areas since he took over as president. A Kodava-Kannada-English dictionary containing 8,000 words was brought out last year.

He announced that a meeting to discuss details about compiling a Kodava encyclopaedia had been postponed to June 20.

Researchers and academics would be invited for the meeting.

K. Damodar, Registrar of the academy, and its members, Mukkatira A. Vasant, Ulliada Dotty Poovaiah, Puttamane Ganesh Muddamaiah and Tennira Ramesh Ponnappa, were present.
