Shimoga
By Our Special Correspondent
SHIMOGA, JUNE 5. It was a World Environment Day function with a difference. The civic workers from the Madiga Meesalati Horata Samithi (Madiga Reservation Action Committee), who have been relieved from service, swept the main road between Ameer Ahmed Circle and Gopi Circle here on Saturday to highlight their problems. In a press note, B.A. Bhanuprasad, district general secretary of the committee, said the Government's recommendation that there be at least one civic worker for a population of 700 was not being observed. On the contrary, the Public Health departments in municipal bodies were sought to be privatised. The Shimoga City Municipal Council had not appointed a single civic worker since 1986. He said nearly 250 civic workers had been rendered jobless even after they had put in a service of over 13 years with the sudden introduction of the contract system. He sought the intervention of the political parties to solve their problems.
