Washington: The U.S. President, George W Bush, has picked the former Republican Senator, John Danforth, to be the next envoy to the United Nations. Mr. Danforth will replace John Negroponte who has been been nominated as the Ambassador to Iraq. Mr. Danforth is seen as a moderate and is popular with both Republicans and Democrats. The confirmation process in the Senate is expected to be quite smooth. Mr. Danforth, it is being pointed out, has been a part of the Capitol Hill scene for nearly two decades till his retirement in 1995, and has held some high profile assignments since stepping down. For instance, during the Clinton administration he was asked to lead a Commission of Inquiry into the death of some 80 Branch Dravidians in Waco, Texas, in 1993 which subsequently cleared the Federal Bureau of Investigation of wrong doing.
