ZP chief launches anti-filariasis drive

GULBARGA, JUNE 5. The president of Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat, Shoba Digambar Belamgi, today inaugurated the programme to eradicate filariasis by distributing diethyle carbomazine citrate (DEC) tablets to the people.

She visited homes in the thickly populated Roza (B) locality in Gulbarga city and handed over tablets to the people there.

The programme of administering the drug, which was launched simultaneously in 31 taluks in Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts, aims at covering 29.98 lakh people in Gulbarga district alone.

Ms. Belamgi, accompanied by officials of the Health Department, went round the locality and asked the people to consume the tablets.

Official sources said the programme would be conducted every year till the disease was eradicated in the State.

The other States where the programme has already been launched are Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, where a large number of people have been affected by the disease.

In Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, the programme was a success with a marked reduction in new cases. Nearly 10,000 health workers and volunteers have been involved in the distribution of DEC tablets throughout the district. While children in the 2 to 5 age group would be administered one 100 mg. tablet, those in the 6-14 age group would be given 200 mg. tablet, and people above the age of 15 would be provided 300 mg. of tablet.
