Appeal to teachers

Bidar June 5. The district administration has appealed to teachers deputed to the filariasis eradication programme to work with commitment for its success. The programme which began on Saturday will go on till June 8.

In a press release, the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Amrit Bettad, clarified that no additional allowance or honorarium would be paid to teachers taking part in the campaign.

Rain in Bellary

BELLARY June 5. Heavy rain lashed Bellary and surrounding areas today, inundating several low-lying areas. The rain, accompanied by gusty winds, damaged two Ashraya houses on Belagal Road in Bellary. Most of the roads in the city were flooded with rainwater that overflowed from the clogged drains.

Reports received here said parts of the district also received heavy rain.

Plea to Govt.

DAVANGERE June 5. The Bharatiya Raitha Okkuta has urged the Government to set up a Bhadra command authority immediately.

Talking to presspersons here today, H.R. Lingaraj, general secretary of the okkuta, said the previous Government had given an assurance that such an authority would be set up but it did not honour its word.

He said that since 1965 repair work had not been carried out on the Bhadra canal which had affected farmers in the command area.

School's feat

Bidar June 5. Sri Manik Public School at Humnabad has achieved 100 per cent results in the Class X examinations conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

According to a press release, Lokesh Patil topped the school with an aggregate of 89 per cent marks. Navin Patil obtained cent per cent marks in Mathematics in the pre-university examinations while Rahul Chauhan scored 99 per cent marks in Physics. The board of governors of the Manik Education Society has congratulated the principal, staff, and students of the school on the achievement.

Awareness

Bidar June 5. A two-month programme to create awareness among students about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) will be taken up in all high schools of the district.

Chandrakant, nodal officer, district tuberculosis and AIDS control, said at a meeting of officials on Friday that the programme would include issues concerning adolescence and post-marital life.

The programme, which will begin from June 28 and end on August 28, was aimed at making students lead a happy and meaningful life, without falling prey to bad habits, Dr. Chandrakant said.

Drowned

Sirsi June 5. Two students from here were drowned in the Shivaganga Falls on Thursday. The bodies were recovered on Friday.

According to the police, Arjun Balachandra Sirsikar (17) and Francis Santan Rodgriues (18) went to the waterfalls to celebrate their pass in the pre-university examinations.

When the former slipped into the water, the other victim jumped to save him. Both were drowned. A case has been registered.

Conference

MANGALORE June 5. Canara Bank conducted a conference of agricultural extension officers at its circle office here recently. The conference was aimed at increasing the credit flow to the agriculture sector and to give directions to field-level functionaries. The conference focused on the need for increased lending to the agriculture sector. It also stressed the need for giving timely credit.

The circle office covers 11 districts of the State and Goa. It plans to disburse Rs. 517 crore under agriculture for the current fiscal.

Talk

MANGALORE June 5. Sudatta, a State-level support group of people who have adopted children, in collaboration with Prajna Counselling Centre, is organising a talk on "Telling the fact of adoption to your child, particularly in the early years".

Aloma Lobo, president of the Voluntary Coordinating Agency, Bangalore, will deliver the talk aimed at helping people share the fact of adoption with the children.

The talk will be held at the centre on Falnir Road on Sunday, a press release stated.
