PONDICHERRY, JUNE 5. The Union Territory administration is planning action against industries damaging the environment and sub-soil water by discharging effluents. Inaugurating the World Environment Day celebration organised by the Pondicherry Department of Science Technology and Environment (DSTE) here today, the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, said the government took a decision that no permission would be given to start chemical or iron and steel industry hereafter as there was an urgent need to protect the environment. Already instances of sub-soil water pollution came to the notice of the Administration. Action would be taken against polluting industries according to the law. Some chemical industries had not paid attention to treating effluents and there were reports that a couple of deep borewells at Mettupalayam were affected by the groundwater pollution. He said schoolchildren should be associated in the `Save environment' campaign. This year's theme was `Wanted Oceans and Seas: Dead or alive'. Planting of saplings would be part of the celebration. Mr. Rangasamy released a bulletin, `Neithal', brought out by the department. A. Anbalagan, MLA, said there should be a statutory authority to keep a tab on industries posing threat to the ecology. He suggested that the DSTE be upgraded into an authority to discipline the erring industries. The Chief Secretary, C.S. Khairwal, presiding, said pollution caused by emission of smoke from vehicles was causing concern.
