Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 5. Around 4,000 volunteers of the Health department today administered DEC tablets under a scheme to prevent occurrence of lymphatic filariasis. An official source said the volunteers were deployed throughout the Union Territory and all eligible sections of people (all those above two years of age) were distributed the tablets. Those who were seriously ill, pregnant women and children below two years were excluded from the scheme. Though breeding of mosquitoes was causing a menace in the Union Territory, the micro filarial rate had come down. The source said the health authorities would continue the distribution of DEC tablets on Sunday and Monday also to cover all those who missed the opportunity today. The office of Health Minister received calls from some sections of people seeking visit of the personnel. The callers were told that they would get the tablets tomorrow as the scheme would be in force during the next two days also. The administration of tablets was done in keeping with the guidelines of the National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme, New Delhi, and the Pondicherry-based ICMR-controlled Vector Control Research Centre. Around eight lakh people were being covered under the scheme. The Rotary Club of Pondicherry (French City) collaborated with the Health department to distribute the tablets at Tirumudi Nagar covering around 500 residents. A.S. Mohammad Nizam, president of the club, led the drive.
