KURNOOL, JUNE 5. The AP Pollution Control Board and Bharat Petroleum Corporation observed the World Environment Day here on Saturday. The BPCL Manager, Mahender Reddy, presided over the meeting which was attended by the Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, Srihari, the Pollution Control Board official, G.S. Badrinath, the industrialist, Saireddy, and J.S.R.K. Sarma of Abhayahastam. Speakers stressed the need for minimising the use of vehicles to reduce pollution, setting up sewage treatment plants in urban areas and setting up of effluent treatment plants in industries and protection of the sea from pollution. NELLORE: The District Collector, G. Anantha Ramu, said every citizen has the responsibility to protect the environment. Addressing a gathering at the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Hall, Nellore, in connection with the World Environment Day, he called for awareness classes for students. He pointed out that excess use of chemical fertilisers and other resources was resulting in the spread of various diseases. Due to dumping of waste in the sea, even the number of visitors to beach resorts was coming down, he said. The Collector advocated planting of more saplings and wanted drastic reduction in the use of plastic bags.
