Kurnool
By Our Staff Reporter
KURNOOL, JUNE 5. The final touches to the KC canal modernisation works assume importance as even a single bottleneck would render the whole project a waste. The project, with assistance from Japanese Overseas Bank, was designed to enhance the carrying capacity of the canal from 2,600 cusecs to 3,800 cusecs. The canal will feed the Alaganur balancing reservoir when water is available in the river and water from the reservoir would be used when the water in the river declined. The project was estimated to cost Rs. 1,107 crores with the State Government agreeing to contribute 11 per cent of the cost. Till the completion of the last financial year, Rs. 724 crores was utilised. The project has to be completed by September 2005. The canal was widened in the lower reaches while the upper reaches are being attempted now. Work is on in the second stretch from 14 to 21 km. The banks of the canal have to be raised, lining completed and bed silt removed. The aqueduct across the Hundri river is to be strengthened to carry 3,800 cusecs while the banks are required to be raised at Bangarupet in Kurnool city. The irrigation officials are complaining their work is being hampered because of stocking of water in the KC canal to meet the drinking water requirements of the city.
