NELLORE, JUNE 5. As many as 103 appeals have been received by the helpline facility from farmers in distress and the concerned mandal revenue officers have been asked to verify all the cases, according to the District Collector, G. Anantha Ramu. He told reporters here on Saturday, that the District Co-operative Central Bank authorities were asked to immediately stop forced collection from farmers, till the Government came up with a relief package. He said the State Level Bankers' Committee would soon meet and a consesus would emerge with regard to relief to farmers. In addition to the distress calls received by the helpline at various centres, 20 more instances reported by the media were verified and only five were found to be agriculture-related and of these three are to be intensively verified. With regard to five per cent interest rebate for farmers on agricultural loans, it has been stated that Rs. 3.77 crores is still available. Mr. Anantha Ramu also warned private moneylenders of stringent action, if they persisted in forced collection from farmers. He promised that information pertaining to the death of farmers would be promptly intimated to the media, though it would take some time to know about the exact cause of death.
