CUDDAPAH, JUNE 5. The District Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, said on Saturday that bio-diesel plantations would be taken up in one lakh hectares in the district in three years. He launched a bio-diesel plantation drive in the district by planting saplings in two hectares of Bhairagi temple land in Pyarampalle village in Galiveedu mandal, on Saturday, the World Environmental Day. Mr. Ranjan said that about one lakh kanuga and 10 lakh neem saplings were available in nurseries in the district. If the villagers came forward to plant these saplings in at least 100 acres, they would be provided borewells and drip irrigation facilities, he assured. He maintained that farmers would not suffer losses if they switched over to bio-diesel plantations. Oil extracted from neem, castor and jetropha seeds could be utilised as bio-diesel, which was pollution-free, he said. The trees do not require much water and they will make wastelands fertile too. Also, the leaves of kanuga trees could be used as fertilizer, he added. The project director of District Water Management Agency, B. Gandhi Reddy, said an action plan was prepared to plant kanuga saplings in 1,000 hectares and nearly 1,000 saplings could be planted in one hectare. The plantations would also facilitate absorption of rainwater by the soil.
