TIRUVARUR, JUNE 5 . School and college students belonging to the Backward Classes, Most Backward Classrd and denotified communities can apply for accommodation in hostels run by the Government, the Collector, G. Sundaramurthy, said today. In a release, he said 17 hostels were functioning at Tiruvarur, Thiruthuraipoondi, Edaiyur, Kovilur, Muthupettai, Mannargudi, Needamangalam, Koradachery, Valangaiman, Mahadevapattinam, Edamelaiyur and Nannilam, for students of these communities. Students studying Standards IV-Plus-Two, under-graduation, post-graduation and technical courses in polytechnic institutes were eligible for admission. Students would be provided boarding and lodging, two sets of uniforms for those studying up to Standard X, textbooks to Standards VI-VII students and guides to students of Standard X and Plus-Two. The income of the students' parents should not exceed Rs. 50,000 a year, and the distance between their residences and the institutions should be more than five km for boys. This criterion would be waived for girls. Students could obtain the application forms, free of cost, from the hostel warden/matron concerned or from the office of the District Backward Classes and Minorities' Welfare officer in the Collectorate. School students should submit the filled-in forms to the warden/matron concerned before June 30, and college students before July 31.
