KASARAGOD, JUNE 6. The special investigating team, probing the theft of an idol and other major robbery cases in the district, has busted an eight-member gang and arrested six persons. According to the police, they were involved in a series of thefts that took place at different places in the district recently. The arrested were identified by the police as Kottikulam Khader, T.H. Hamza, K.M. Ashraf, N.A. Sherif, Abdul Latheef and M. Abdulla. The police said that the gang was behind the theft of the idol at the Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple in November last. The gang is also suspected to have robbed 300 sovereigns of gold and Rs.1.15 lakhs from the house of Muhammed at Kappil, near here, in July last. The police said that they had managed to recover 115 sovereigns of gold. The accused were also charged with the robbery of gold ornaments and Rs.10,000 from a house at Kappil in February 2004. The police suspect that the gang was involved in a burglary at Kottikulam in December last. The police said that the gang also used to steal electronic gadgets like VCRs and TVs from houses in and around Kottikulam, near here. The special investigation team, under the supervision of the SP, P.Vijayan, was headed by the Kanhangad Dy. SP Pushkaran. The police are searching for two gang members who are still at large.
