Mayor promises steps to solve power crisis

THRISSUR, JUNE 5 . The Thrissur Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, today claimed that the problem of power distribution in Thrissur city can be resolved within six months if the Corporation Council, scheduled to meet on June 8, gave approval for the projects in this regard.

Addressing a press conference after holding talks with top officials of the KSEB, including the Chairman, T.M. Manoharan, here today, the Mayor said the KSEB had responded positively to many of his proposals, including the setting up of more transformers and feeders for power distribution in the city.

The Mayor said he would seek the permission of the Corporation Council for entrusting the major power works to the State-owned KITCO so that the drawing of lines and installation of transformers could be completed fast.

The Mayor said more vehicles would be provided to the electricity offices in the wards that have been newly added to the Corporation so that complaints on power distribution can be attended to quickly.

According to him, the KSEB had responded positively to the proposal to hand over the power distribution in the newly-added wards also to the Corporation. There will be a discussion between the Corporation authorities and the KSEB officials on June 11 to discuss the long-pending issue of arrears to be paid to the Electricity Board.

Replying to questions, the Mayor said arrears from consumers totalled Rs. 6 crores and efforts were on to collect it at the earliest.

The Corporation has been able to collect nearly Rs. 20 crores from the accumulated arrears in the drive launched during the last one year.

The Deputy Mayor, P.S. Johny, the former Mayor. Jose Kattukkaran. and the Health standing committee chairman, D. Usman, were among those present at the press conference.
