COIMBATORE, JUNE 5. A male giant Indian Squirrel, aged about one-and-a-half years, which was spotted on the Anna University campus, Chennai, recently was let into its habitat in the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary (IGWLS) near Pollachi yesterday. Its wildlife warden, V. Ganesan told The Hindu that the squirrel, measuring two feet from head to tail, was a protected animal under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and was included under part II and Schedule II of the Act. The species is largely distributed in the hill forests of peninsular India. The squirrel was rescued from the campus by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. It was let into a moist deciduous forest patch adjoining the Karianshola national park near Topslip at IGWLS, Mr. Ganesan said.
