CHENNAI, JUNE 5. An individual's concern for environment flows only out of his concern for fellow human beings, said the Chairman of the National Commission on Farmers, M.S. Swaminathan. Speaking at the launch of The Friends of The Banyan and its Special Occasion Scheme (SOS) here today, the renowned farm scientist said, "without concern for human beings, there cannot be a genuine concern for environment." Lamenting that people have learnt to shut their eyes to the misery of others, Dr. Swaminathan said persons in need required not only charity but also love and kindness. Dwelling on the `self-perpetuating' image of the banyan tree, he commended the work of the organisation and said, "it is in our own self-interest that we must lend financial, moral, physical and spiritual support to philanthropic activities." L. Lakshman of the Rane Group said `cheque-book charity' was not enough, and added that the Banyan-type work required `unique human quality.' He called for institutionalisation of philanthropy by the corporate sector, either through direct financial assistance or through indirect help like imparting training. Founder-trustee of The Banyan, Vandana Gopikumar, said the organisation was in need of more space as at present a facility meant for only 200 inmates was accommodating more than 375 persons. She wanted a positive Government response in this regard.
