DEHRA DUN, JUNE 5. The Supreme Court's interim order restraining the Election Commission from issuing a notification to fill 65 vacancies in the Rajya Sabha has come as a ray of hope for aspirants for the job from Uttaranchal. Lobbying for a Congress ticket to fill the single vacancy from Uttaranchal are Satpal Maharaj, a former Union Minister and 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee Vice-Chairman; Vijay Bahuguna, the State Planning Commission Vice-Chairman who lost the Tehri Lok Sabha seat for the second time this year; Paripoornanand Painuli, former MP from Tehri, freedom fighter and journalist; Manorma Sharma Dobriyal, Mayor of Dehra Dun; and Surendra Kumar, Member of the State Consumer Forum. All of them are busy putting up their case before the senior leaders in Delhi. The aspirants were however sceptical of securing a ticket as the names of Mohisina Kidwai and some other leaders from outside the State were being given out as the more likely choice of the high command. This theory gained weight as the local leaders had failed to secure more than one out of the five Lok Sabha seats in Uttaranchal.
