CJP decides to merge with Congress

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 5. The Congress Jananayaga Peravai (CJP) has decided to merge with the Congress.

This resolution was adopted at its executive and general body meeting held here today under the chairmanship of the CJP MLA, Vallalperuman.

Another resolution thanked the Congress for inducting the CJP founder, P. Chidambaram, into the United Progressive Alliance Government Ministry and for giving him the key finance portfolio.

Mr. Vallaperuman proposed both the resolutions, which were adopted unanimously. Mr. Chidambaram was not present.

According to a party spokesman, the copies would be sent to the Congress high command for approval, after which merger date would be announced.

Earlier, State and district-level presidents expressed support for the merger and they were confident that it would strengthen the secular and nationalist forces in Tamil Nadu. They hoped that the Congress would give due representation to CJP cadres in the party hierarchy.

Some speakers expressed a desire that Karthik Chidambaram be made the State Youth Congress president to attract youth to the Congress fold.

Mr. Chidambaram, who was instrumental along with the late G.K. Moopanar in forming the Tamil Maanila Congress in 1996, was expelled from the party for opposing the TMC's alliance with the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the 2001 Assembly election. He then floated the TMC Democratic Forum, which was later called CJP.

In the May 10 election, Mr. Chidambaram successfully contested from Sivaganga on the Congress ticket. The State Congress leaders wanted the high command to insist on his merging the CJP with the Congress, at least after the election was over. And the CJP took that decision today, even without the presence of its leader.
