Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy
CHENNAI, JUNE 5. "We will leave no stone unturned to solve the drinking water problem of Chennai," the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said today. Talking to reporters at the airport on arrival here from Hyderabad to attend the wedding of the former Chennai Mayor, M.K. Stalin's daughter, Dr. Reddy said the Andhra Pradesh Government would give a sympathetic consideration to solve the drinking water problem of the neighbouring States, including Tamil Nadu. "I think you have problem with Cauvery and not with Krishna," he added jocularly. Asked about the Telangana issue, Dr. Reddy said the stand announced in the Common Minimum Programme of the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre held good. "There is no other change". To a query why the Andhra Pradesh Government was hesitating to arrest Balakrishna, son of the late Chief Minister, N.T. Rama Rao, in connection with Thursday's shootout in Hyderabad, Dr. Reddy said the "law will take its own course. A high-level enquiry by police is already on and since he is hospitalised, human consideration has been shown. However, I would like to make it clear that in Andhra Pradesh we do not believe in taking hasty action against anybody, unlike in other States". Referring to suicide by farmers in Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Reddy said the government was embarking on a series of measures including free farm power supply. Electricity dues of about Rs. 1,200 crores were recently waived. "I cannot change the lifestyle of farmers in two or three weeks' time", he said.
