EC directive on RS polls

CHENNAI JUNE 5. The Election Commission has directed that the process for conduct of biennial/by-election to the Rajya Sabha 2004 be stopped until its further orders. This followed the orders of the Supreme Court on June 4, according to an official release here today.

(As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, six vacancies, arising this month, will have to be filled. The notification was to have been issued yesterday.)

Port strike called off

CHENNAI JUNE 5. The labour strike at Chennai port's privatised container terminal was called off this evening.

This follows an agreement between the private operator of the terminal and its non-management workers before the Regional Labour Commissioner, according to shipping industry sources. Confirming the development, Chennai Port Trust officials said work is scheduled to resume from the third shift beginning at 10 p.m. tonight.

The strike by over 300 non-management workers had delayed container handling, led to a pile-up of the cargo boxes and caused huge financial loss to exporters and importers.

Details of the agreement were, however, not known immediately. The workers had stopped work on May 23 night demanding better working conditions and reinstatement of four suspended employees.

3 inhale poisonous gas, die

Vellore JUNE 5. Three tannery workers were killed and eight others swooned while cleaning an effluent tank in a tannery at Kasba near Ambur today.

According to the police, when Sridharan (35), Murugayyan (42), and Kanakaraj (20) entered the tank, toxic gas came up. The three fainted immediately. Later, they were declared dead. Three others who were also engaged in cleaning the tank and five persons who tried to rescue them swooned. They were admitted to the Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore.

Escape bid foiled

TIRUCHI JUNE 5. The city police last evening foiled an escape attempt by two Sri Lankan Tamils, arrested for alleged possession of heroin.

The police sources here said Antony Bruno (35) of Mannar and Jayakumar (35) of Jaffna, who were arrested by the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) police at Velankanni a few days ago, were taken from the central prison here to Thanjavur court for remand extension. On the way back, after alighting from bus at the TVS Toll Gate here, Jayakumar and Bruno pushed the policemen and started running near the Subramaniapuram market. But they were caught with the help of the public.

Policeman killed in accident

Tirunelveli JUNE 5. A policeman, attached to the `Q' Branch, was killed in a road accident today when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus hit his two-wheeler.

The police said Nagarajan (42), hailing from Vickramasingapuram, was coming to Tirunelveli from Kallidaikurichi in a two-wheeler. As he reached Vellanguli, a TNSTC bus hit him, killing him on the spot.

The driver, V. Chellappa (47), has been arrested.

Police recruit commits suicide

Tirunelveli JUNE 5. A recruit police constable allegedly committed suicide today.

The police said Krishnasamy (24) of Panaivadalichathram, had gone to his native place without getting proper permission from his higher-ups in the training school. As he went missing couple of days ago, the police at Panaivadalichathram was alerted.

But he was found dead in his farm today. As pesticide bottles were found near his body, he might have consumed it, the police said.

Two held for damaging statues

Nagercoil JUNE 5. The police today arrested two persons on the charge of damaging the statues of Mother Mary and Infant Jesus at Kurusadi near Maravankudiyiruppu last night.

According to police sources, Indiran and Ramajeyam allegedly in an inebriated condition damaged the two idols installed by Almas in an open place on the premises of his house.

Textile unions to file appeal

COIMBATORE JUNE 5. The Tamil Nadu Joint Action Council of Textile Trade Unions (JAC) has decided to file an appeal against the order of the special industrial tribunal (accepting the wage settlements of some individual textile mill managements in the State with their workmen).

This was one of the decisions taken at the JAC meeting held here today, according to trade union sources.

Spirit seized

Krishnagiri June 5. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel on Friday seized 7,100 litres of rectified spirit at Krishnagiri here on Friday. The police said following instructions from the Superintendent of Police, M. Ashok Kumar, a team, which was checking vehicles, intercepted a lorry coming from Karnataka on the by-pass and seized the spirit. The lorry driver was arrested and the lorry seized.

Krishnagiri June 5. The Bargur All Women Police Station here arrested a person on Friday on charges of demanding dowry. The police said Raman and his relatives used to harass his wife Rajathi to bring more dowry.

Rajathi filed a complaint with the police station, which arrested Raman.

Fatally knocked down

PUDUKOTTAI JUNE 5 . A cyclist was fatally knocked down by a mini lorry at Thirumayam early today.

The police said Ramaiah (22) of Ammampatti was riding a cycle with his friend, Jayaraman in the pillion, from Thirumayam to Amampatti. A mini lorry, bound to Tiruchi from Karaikudi, hit the cycle from behind. While Ramaiah died on the spot, Jayaraman was injured.

The driver, Satyamurthy, was arrested.

Pirated CDs seized

KARUR JUNE 5 . Sleuths of the Anti-Video Piracy Cell have seized 2,500 VCDs, from a shop here on Friday evening and arrested the owner.

The police said the VCDs included many new Tamil films.

The police also seized 50 unrecorded CDs and some other computer peripherals. Further investigation was under way.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI JUNE 5 . The level in the Mettur dam stood at 36.55 feet today.

The inflow was 3,064 cusecs and the discharge 148 cusecs.

Spirit seized

Tirunelveli June 5. A total of 4,970 litres of rectified sprit was seized from a van on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border from a van.

The police said the vehicle was going from Rameswaram to Quilon with rotten fishes, according to the trip-sheet of the vehicle. Though the van met with a minor accident near Tenkasi this morning, the driver did not stop the vehicle and rushed to the border.

As the Tenkasi police alerted their colleagues manning the Puliyarai checkpost on the border, the van was intercepted. When the fish was removed, the police found rectified sprit kept in 142 plastic containers, with a capacity of 35 litres each. The cost of the smuggled chemical is said to be Rs.2 lakhs. The driver and the cleaner escaped.

Water level

MADURAI June 5. The level in the Periyar dam stood at 112.5 feet with an inflow of 197 cusecs. The storage rose to 1312 mcft. The level in the Vaigai dam was 24.97 feet with a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 1440 mcft. Periyar received 14 mm followed by Tekkadi - 8 mm in the last 24 hours in the region.
