ELURU, JUNE 5. Two more farmers -- P. Srinu (28) of Lakshmipuram in Devarapalli mandal, and N. Govind alias Gopi (32), of Duggirala in Pedavegi mandal, -- committed suicide in West Godavari district on Saturday. The hapless farmer in Duggirala had borrowed Rs. 2 lakhs from private moneylenders but failed to clear the dues due to crop failure. Govind raised guava on his 90 cents of land but the crop withered for want of water. Later, he took four acres of land on lease to raise paddy which was also badly damaged during the cyclone in December last. He was due to give the landlord 60 bags of paddy towards lease. In this backdrop, he resorted to the extreme step on Saturday morning. Srinu was married three months ago. He borrowed Rs 50,000 from Duddukuru Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society and other sources to take up farming on eight acres of land taken on lease. Following crop failure due to acute drought, he ended his life. NIZAMABAD: A Dalit farmer ended his life by hanging himself unable to clear debts and meet the cost of the treatment for cancer in Jamalam village of Yedpalli mandal on Saturday. Reports reaching here said, Mala Chinna Sailoo, a small farmer owing 1.23 acres of land was suffering from cancer for the last one decade and could not cope with the huge cost of treatment. The severe drought condition also compounded his woes. He took a loan of Rs. 4,162 from the Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society, Yedpalli and purchased one acre land from the Nizam Sugar Factory as part of the land purchase scheme of the SC Corporation. However, unable to clear the debt and chronic ailment forced him to end his life. He is survived by wife and three daughters. ADILABAD: Unable to clear debts, Jadhav Mohan Rao (56), a cotton farmer from Yeldi village in Utnoor mandal, consumed poison on Wednesday at his residence. He died on Friday midnight while undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital in Adilabad. According to reports reaching here he owned five acres of land. Due to successive failure of cotton crops he ran into debts of Rs.3 lakhs. GUNTUR: A 27-year-old cotton farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide unable to repay his debts to the tune of Rs. 2 lakhs at Chennaipalem in Machavaram mandal of Guntur district. He is survived by wife and two daughters.
