NEW DELHI, JUNE 5 . D.C. Sankhla, an IAS officer of the 1969 batch of the Union Territory cadre, was convicted and sentenced to undergo life imprisonment by the Additional Sessions Judge, Ambala, for committing the murder of a businessman, Sushil Kumar Jain, eight years ago. Three others were also handed down life imprisonment. A CBI release said Sushil Kumar Jain owned 27 acres of farmland in Patti Kalyana, near Samlakha, in Panipat district of Haryana. He was caught in a litigation with Mr. Sankhla over the farmland which the IAS officer wanted to own. Mr. Sankhla owned a small piece of land adjoining the businessman's property. The statement said Mr. Sankhla entered into a conspiracy with Som Dutt Tyagi, a property dealer of Delhi, and hired two persons to kill Sushil Kumar Jain on April 22, 1996 on G.T. Road near Samlakha. The case was initially registered at Samlakha against Mr. Sankhla and others and was subsequently transferred to the CBI by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The CBI took over the probe from the Haryana Police and filed a chargesheet against the accused on February 17, 1997. All the four convicted were arrested today and sent to jail, the release added.
