Separatist group's plea to Hurriyat factions

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR, JUNE 5. The Ittehadi Force today appealed to the two factions of the Hurriyat Conference to play a constructive role in the efforts to re-unite the separatist groups in Jammu and Kashmir.

Comprising separatist organisations such as the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front, the Democratic Freedom Party, the People's League, the Jamat-e-Islami, the Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadith and the Kashmir Bar Association, the Ittehadi Force blamed the Hurriyat factions for being a "stumbling block" in uniting all the separatist forces in Kashmir.

The People's League chairman, Sheikh Aziz, said the Ittehadi Force, which was set up seven months ago, had tried to bring about reconciliation "in the larger interests of the movement," but its efforts were not being taken seriously.

Even as the move received overwhelming support from Kashmiri leaders abroad, "there are some people here who do not want it to happen," he told presspersons. "And we are constrained to take them to the people's court."

Mr. Aziz appealed to the two factions to join the reconciliatory efforts initiated by the Bar Association. "This will be their last chance."

The JKLF chairman, Yaseen Malik, and the DFP chief, Shabir Shah, have decided not to accept any position in the new forum, he added.
