NEW DELHI, JUNE 5. Thirtyseven-year-old Rajeev Mathur, Deputy News Editor with the national English daily The Statesman, was killed when a speeding Tata-407 vehicle rammed into his Maruti car on Lodhi Road here in the wee hours of Saturday. The erring driver has been arrested. It all happened around 2-30 a.m. when Mr. Mathur was returning to his Gulmohar Park residence after doing his night shift at the Connaught Place office of the newspaper. While he was taking a right turn at the traffic signal junction near Dyal Singh College, the Tata-407 coming from the Nizamuddin side crashed into his vehicle. The tempo dragged the vehicle for about 50 metres before coming to a halt. The windscreen and the windows of the Maruti car were shattered due to the impact. While the tempo driver fled, some passers-by informed the police about the accident. Mr. Mathur was rushed to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences where he was declared dead on arrival. A graduate from Delhi University, Mr. Mathur had worked with The Hindu Business Line, the Today group and Wahindia media group before joining The Statesman. He lost his father when he was merely two years old. His mother, Pramila Mathur, who worked with the United Nations, has now retired. The area where the accident occurred is considered a black spot as several fatal mishaps have occurred there in the past. While a Channel V video jockey, Pooja Mukherji, and four of her friends were killed in a gruesome accident in 2002, a retired Army colonel was run over by a rashly driven bus while he was taking a walk last year. The infamous BMW case also occurred not far away from there. The police have traced and arrested the tempo driver, Nirvesh Tyagi, and registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
