Colleges may adopt different strategy for admissions

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, JUNE 5. This June, while thousands of students wait for announcement of the first cut-off admission lists by colleges of Delhi University, the science departments of various colleges would be keeping an eye on the results of various medical and engineering tests.

With results of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)-conducted All-India Pre-Medical/Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT) already out and that of IIT-JEE expected on June 17, colleges say they may adopt a different strategy for this year's admissions if more results are out early. A total of 1,519 candidates have been placed on the merit list and 1,063 on the wait list in the AIPMT list.

Admission to sciences courses have usually had colleges admitting 10 per cent more than the seats available as most toppers often leave the college after gaining admission in an engineering or medical college. "We are expecting the results of these competitive examinations to come out earlier than usual and it would make a difference to the admission and cut-off. We have been admitting more students than the seats available because most top ones leave after the results come out. But the cut-off may not go too high from last year if the results are out early as by then most students would know if they have cleared the exam or not. In fact, the results of Karnataka are also out and that would make a difference. We would also have to take into account the fact that many more students have this year got over 90 per cent in the Board exams, which means many more are eligible too. We will take all this into account while deciding the cut-off,'' pointed out Sri Venkateswara College Principal, Dr. A.S.Reddy.

But then there are those who believe that if the results do come out rather early, then the science courses may actually see a drop in the cut-offs for the first time. "It would depend on whether the results are out by June 26, when the first cut-off would be announced. But in case most of them are out, then we might just a see a drop in the cut-off or around the same cut-off as last year. We would be keeping an eye on the result and the counselling dates as these students are taken into consideration while deciding the cut- off,'' said the Kirori Mal College Principal, Bhim Sen Singh.

As for students, they say would prefer to go safe by taking admission until they have a confirmed place in an engineering or medical institution.
