Mainly clear sky forecast

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. A mainly clear sky that is likely to become partly cloudy towards afternoon or evening is in store for the Capital on Sunday. According to the weatherman, there is possibility of light rain and thundery developments in some areas. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 39 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperature recorded at Safdarjung on Saturday was 38.1 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius respectively. Palam recorded a maximum of 39.3 degrees Celsius and minimum of 26 degrees Celsius.

While Safdarjung received 1.9 mm of rainfall, Palam did not receive any rain.

The maximum humidity recorded at Safdarjung and Palam was 81 per cent and 59 per cent respectively while the minimum was 45 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.

Rescued

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. eventeen juveniles from Bihar who were being made to work in an embroidery unit at Govindpuri in South Delhi have been rescued by a joint team of the Delhi police and a non-government organisation (NGO), Bachpan Bachao Andolan. The unit owner has been arrested.

Acting on a complaint by Bachpan Bachao Andolan that several children were being made to work at the embroidery unit, the police mounted a raid and rescued 17 of them. The unit owner, Munnawal, disclosed that he had brought them from various places in Bihar on the pretext of providing them jobs. He has been booked under the provisions of child labour. Further investigations are on.

Smack seized

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. The police claim to have arrested a drug peddler from Inderpuri in South-West Delhi and recovered 10 gm of smack from his possession.

Acting on a tip-off that a man dealing in drugs would come to Inderpuri, the police laid a trap and arrested the suspect. He has been identified as Ranjit. The police said he had been arrested several times in the past under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, the Excise and the Arms Acts.

Assaulted

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. A 20-year-old woman was allegedly criminally assaulted by her neighbour at R.K. Puram in South-West Delhi on Friday. The accused is absconding.

According to the police, the incident occurred in the afternoon when the woman, who is married, was alone in her house. Her neighbour gained entry into the house on some pretext and then forced himself on her.

A case of rape has been registered at the R.K. Puram police station and a hunt launched for the accused.

Arrested

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. Four young men appearing in the polytechnic entrance examination in place of genuine candidates were arrested at the Inderpuri examination centre in South-West Delhi today.

The accused were identified as Nishant Virmani, Manish Chand, Sandeep Puri and Shamsher Ali. While crosschecking the identity cards of the candidates, the examination superintendent, Ratna, and the observer, Vimal Dimri, noticed that the four were not genuine candidates, following which they called up the police and got them arrested on charges of impersonation.

Lambasted

NEW DELHI JUNE 5. Lambasting policies of multi-national corporations and global monetary agencies including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, national movement -- Azadi Bachao Andolan (ABA) - today urged the newly-formed Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government to come out of the shackles of these agencies and work towards solving the problem of unemployment and poverty that were attaining dangerous proportions in the country.
