MANGALORE, JUNE 5. People of Madanthyar in Belthangady taluk on Saturday paid their last respects to Lawrence Gregory Monis, who was shot dead by a militant group linked to the Al-Qaeda at Khobar in Saudi Arabia on May 29. More than 2,000 people attended the funeral service of Mr. Monis. The cortege left the Monis residence at Panakaje Arthila at 9.30 a.m. after a brief prayer service. The specially designed coffin in which the body was flown in, was opened an hour earlier for people to pay their last respects. Although there was no procession, hundreds of vehicles headed for the Sacred Heart Church at Madanthyar. The policemen had a tough time in controlling the traffic. A group of priests, including the Vicar-General, Fredrick Pereira, Archie Gonsalves and Harold Mascarenhas, conducted the funeral service. William Gonsalves, the parish priest of Milagres Church, was the chief priest at the service. The body was later buried at the church cemetery. The parish priest described Lawrence Monis as a very disciplined and hardworking person. William D'Souza, a close friend of the victim's, said the latter, who wanted to return to India, had extended his stay there on a request from the company. The victim, in his last e-mail to Mr. D'Souza on May 28, said that he would come to India on June 16. But fate willed otherwise and he fell victim to a terrorist strike the next day. The family thanked the authorities concerned for expediting the early release of the body.
