By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, JUNE 5. K. Mathai, Kannada Nadu member, has urged the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, to take steps to hold an investigation into the allegation that the Transport Department authorities are allowing overloaded goods carriers on the roads in the city. If the allegation were to be true, the Government is losing revenue and the roads are being damaged. Mr. Mathai told presspersons here on Saturday that several lorries overloaded with iron and manganese ores were plying on the roads in the city in violation of the traffic norms. Most of these vehicles carrying ore from Hospet, Chitradurga, Sandur and Tumkur to Karwar, Marmagao and Mangalore ports were overloaded by at least three times their capacity. He alleged that the transporters, in connivance with top officials of the department and the local officials, were not paying taxes, resulting in loss of revenue for the Government. Moreover, they were damaging the National Highways 13, 17 and 48 and the local roads. The lorries were also increasing chances of road accidents. Air pollution was another problem. The ore dust was posing a health hazard, he added.
