CHENNAI, JUNE 5. The Public Works Minister, O. Paneerselvam, today joined issue with the Congress Legislature Party leader, S.R. Balasubramaniam, who on Friday demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa. The Minister, who is also the party's election wing secretary, wanted to know whether Mr. Balasubramaniam, who had asked Ms. Jayalalithaa to quit following the AIADMK-front's debacle in the Lok Sabha polls, would put forth a similar demand in other States also. "Will he advise the same to the Chief Ministers of Kerala, Punjab and Uttaranchal, where the Congress suffered an impressive defeat?" Of the 17 seats in Kerala which the ruling Congress contested it did not win even in a single constituency. In Punjab, the party won only two out of 11 seats. In Uttaranchal, it could get only one seat out of five. Hence, in all fairness, would the Congress leader demand the resignation of the Chief Ministers of these States also? The Minister said he sympathised with Mr. Balasubramaniam who did not know that "when he is pointing an accusing finger, the other fingers are pointing to him". It was surprising that he did not know the difference between elections to the Assembly and the Lok Sabha. The people had delivered the verdict in 2001 for Ms. Jayalalithaa to rule the State for five years. This being so, who was Mr. Balasubramaniam to say she should quit, Mr. Paneerselvam asked.
