TIRUPUR, JUNE 5. Efforts are on to improve the composting process at the yard in Koilvazhi near here, under the comprehensive domestic waste management programme that is being implemented by the municipality in association with a private company. The programme started in October 2001 and the municipality sent segregated bio-degradable waste to the yard for composting. During the last few months, about 35 tonnes of segregated waste was being despatched every day to the yard. The monthly production of manure at the yard was nearly 150 tonnes. According to the project coordinator of the Centre for Environment Education, Archana Dange, as part of the efforts to improve composting at the yard, the CEE is likely to suggest to the private company to set up a laboratory at the yard and also appoint a biologist. These would improve the quality of the manure produced at the yard and would also help in expanding its market. The Municipal Commissioner, Sudharshan G. Choudary, said that the municipality was considering whether to revise the contract with the company on a "revenue sharing basis". The yard was set up by the private company under the build-operate-transfer scheme. According to the original contract between the company and the municipality, seven acres had been leased out by the municipality to the company for setting up the yard. Besides, it was to supply 100 tonnes of waste (not segregated) to the yard every day. The company would pay the municipality Rs. 3.50 a tonne of waste and Rs. 1.75 lakhs a year as lease amount.
