KOCHI, JUNE 5. The subway along the bridge at Thykoodam is likely to be ready soon, bringing a respite to residents in the area. Sources in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that work was going on for the new bridge at Thykoodam. Approach roads would be constructed after the bridge work is over. This would be followed by the work on cutting the embankment and diversion of traffic through the new bridge. The subway work would begin soon after. A draft plan has been prepared for the subway construction, they said. Work is on to make the Vytilla-Aroor stretch on the national highway four-lane. The NH Subway Action Committee, Thykoodam, had been demanding a subway in the area for the past many years. Francis Manjooran, general convener of the action committee, said the former Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, B.C. Khanduri, had given an assurance that the subway would be constructed at the earliest, considering the need for pedestrians to cross the stretch. He said that the height of the subway was proposed to be 5.5 metre and the width 7 metre, as per the plan prepared by the NHAI. Moves were afoot to reduce the height to 3.5 metre. This would affect the movement of vehicles like trucks and buses. Steps had to be taken to retain the height at 5.5 metre, he said. Moreover, steps should be taken to maintain the service road till the Chambakkara Canal for the benefit of over 100 families staying there, Mr. Manjooran said. Memoranda were given to the District Collector, Gyanesh Kumar, and the NHAI authorities in this regard.
